BEACH HOLIDAYS: To Zanzibar, Tanga, Dar es Salaam, Bagamoyo, Pemba and Mafia.
Boat tours and/or fishing

NB:- It doesn’t
mean that we cannot book with other Hotels, we
Step up a level and you have hotels that cost between $250per person per night and $350per person per night. General standards are a step up from the lower end of the market and the hotels tend to have their own dive centers and the facilities of larger resorts such as tennis courts etc. General food and service levels are very high. To start with is a hotel that we have supported since it was built:Ras Nungwi on the Northern tip of the island. Nungwi has arguably the best beach on the island and all the facilities of a large resort but with only 28 rooms. Ras Nungwi has stood the test of time to consistently deliver great service. It is a small hotel that delivers great reports. It is superb value and with the best dive centre on the island it excels in its price bracket. Matemwe Bungalows is an old favorite in the office but also one that seems to split opinion amongst travelers - you are either a Matemwe Bungalows person, or you are not! The beach here is poor in comparison to elsewhere, but for those wanting to stay as far away from the crowds as possible on the island, it is a good bet.
This is obviously just a summary and we strongly recommend you send us an email/call to discuss the perfect area for your Zanzibar holiday.

8. Wete
is the second most important urban center of Pemba. Located about 30 km north of Chake Chake, it is the most populous town in Pemba with about 27 000 people. It has head offices for some government departments and is the headquarter of the district as well as the Pemba North region. The sea port at Wete was once a very important gateway to the island of Pemba but poor maintenance of the jetty and the upgrading of Mkoani warf has dropped down the use of her sea port.
C. MAFIA ISLAND
Mafia island lies 30 minutes by plane, 130 kilometres south-west of Dar-es-Salaam. Flights cost $140 each way from Dar, $180 from Zanzibar and $280 from Selous.
Today Mafia is known as a beautiful Indian Ocean island that is famous for deep sea fishing and scuba diving. Aquatic life is abundant and the coral gardens are in good health due to the protection of the Mafia Island Marine Park. The park is located between the Rufiji River delta to the west and the open Indian Ocean to the east. The dual influences of the river and the sea have combined to create a rich and exceptional biodiversity with unique landscapes under the sea and on dry land.

The largest resort
style hotel we use is Breezes Beach Club, a great value resort with
finely tuned operations and rooms that suit families and honeymooners alike.
Breezes has been around for years and has earned the reputation of the best
resort on the island.
Zanzibar: Where to stay: Top End
Baraza (Breezes
sister Hotel) and The
Palms are
much more expensive, but they are amongst the finest hotels on the island and
make a superb location for a Zanzibar
Holiday or Zanzibarhoneymoon.
Baraza has 36 rooms and with private plunge pools, offers some of the best
accommodation on the island. It is our favourite hotel for families wanting the
best the island can offer.
The Palms is next door and with only six rooms offers a more intimate
experience that fits very well with couples wanting to keep to themselves. The
newly opened La
Residence is a
new top end resort with exceptionally high, albeit fairly expensive, service
levels. The quality of the beach here is our only issue but we cannot deny their
effort; your every need is attended to here! A smaller hotel also at the top
end of the market, is Kilindi, an
elaborately designed hotel that has amazing rooms and certainly offers the most
privacy of any hotel, though the beach is not as good as it should be.
But, without a doubt the best
lodge in Zanzibar is Mnemba island, located off Zanzibar's
North East tip. Mnemba is a small island with Africa's finest beach, and only ten rooms.
Needless to say, Mnemba costs an absolute fortune, but it is exceptional.
Having debated this for a long time in the office, and having staff who have
viewed many of the worlds top beach hotels, we believe it is deserving of the
price tag. Mnemba is one of the best beach islands in the world.
Even further east of Matemwe is Kiwengwa
and Pongwe.
These areas have great beaches, but also a few large
hotels that don’t really offer much charm. Unlike most other areas of Zanzibar, there isn’t any real focus or central point to head to
here, such as a village. Bweju and Dongwe are home to some of the best beaches
on the island and a very long stretch of pristine beach. Although there are a
few big properties here, they are very good and this area is well worth staying
in.
On the far southern coast is Kizimkazi. The beaches here are
mainly coral rock but the dving and snorkelling around these area are
incredible, especially at Unguja.
This is obviously just a summary and we strongly recommend you send us an email/call to discuss the perfect area for your Zanzibar holiday.
( d ) Back packers:
For
back packers and/or purely budgeted tours to Zanzibar,
we recommend groups of 4 people or more per trip, in order to share transport
and accommodation costs. We have a special plan for back packers (On request).
We
can organize a tour for two nights three days all inclusive by cost of 250$ per
person per trip.
NB:-
Rates may change due to currency fluctuation, fuel price and/or third party
rate increase. This will be notified to our clients before commencement of
services.
B. PEMBA
Chake Chake is the largest town in Pemba and also the
“capital city” of the island. In addition, it is the oldest town on Pemba Island, built in
the typical Arab style just like her larger sister,Stone Town in Zanzibar. Enjoy a
walk around the narrow streets, the busy market, have a cup of “kahawa” (ground
coffee) “chai” (tea) and “tangawizi” (ginger tea) around the corner…
2.
Chwaka Ruins
Remains
of an early settlement
Located
a little way south east of Tumbe are part of the ruins (some of which are
overgrown or buried under the earth) of a large 15th century town. The
settlement is thought to have been ruled by Haroun bin Ali, the son of the
notorious "Mkama Ndume" of Pujini. By all accounts he was as
cruel as his father, earning himself the nickname of "Mvanja Pau",
(the breaker of the pole). The large town spanning across 20 hectares is
said to have once boasted a fort, reception halls, two mosques and an iron
works as well as a harbour in the nearby creek.
Today all that remains of this sprawling settlement are the lower walls of a
large mosque which was constructed around a series of arched doorways.
Excavations have revealed bowls dating back to the 15th century, now preserved
at the Zanzibar Museum and the Victoria and AlbertMuseum in London.
Legend has it that Haroun's wife ordered the building of a second, smaller
mosque, known as Msikiti Chooko, or the mosque of the green grain, after she
demanded grain to be added to the mortar mix to strengthen the structure.
A number of tombs were discovered behind the mosque, among them a single
pillared structure decorated with glazed tiles which is believed to have been
the tomb of Haroun himself.
3.
Mkia wa Ng'ombe
The
Swahili People are rich in medicines to treat themselves when they feel sick.
They have always used the herbs that grow in the nature surrounding them. Every
house / family has at least a little knowledge about these herbs. Yet, there
are some who are actual healers, “Waganga”.
There
is also an ancient tradition of oils which are used for different purposes,
whether in massages or to anoint the body, for example as an ointment for a
woman before getting together with her husband.
4.
Mkoani
Despite
the fact that Mkoani is one of the three major towns of Pemba, counting
approx. 10,000 inhabitants, things here happen at their own slow, leisurely
pace. It is located in the west of the island, and its main feature is the port,
which the traveler reaches coming from Unguja (Zanzibar) by ferry.
5. Mtambwe Mkuu
is
located on a small island towards the south of Wete. It is joined to Pemba only during low
tide. Here you will get to see the pre-colonial silver minted coins. The place
can easily be reached by dhow or canoe from the Wete harbor.
6. Pujini Ruins
Approx.
10 km southeast of Chake Chake, we find the ruins of a 13th century fortified
town inPemba. Pujini was the official seat of the infamous Mohamed bin Abdul
Rahman who ruledPemba before the arrival of the
Portuguese, around the 15th century. Locally, Rahman was known as “Mkame Ndume”
(the milker of men) because of his cruelty and the harsh way in which he used
to punish his people. His citadel was a massive stone-built structure
surrounded by a trench and a huge earthen rampart. A deep man-made canal cut
out of a creek running through the mangrove swamps was the only access for his
ships to the sea.
7.
Ras Mkumbuu
Human
settlement at Ras Mkumbu dates back to the 6th century c.e., long before the
arrival of the Omani Arabs and SHirazis around the 12th century. The place is
particularly famous for the ruins of a large mosque with an arched mihrab (for
prayer, showing the direction of Mecca), fourteen elaborate pillare tombs,
several wells as well as the foundations of houses thought to date from around
the 14th or 15th century.
8. Wete
is the second most important urban center of Pemba.
The resident population of 46,000 are mainly fishermen or smallholder farmers that grow coconut, paw-paw, rice and cassava. The friendly and welcoming islanders create a relaxed atmosphere.
The
dominant religion is moderate Islam and both christians and muslims
live in peace and harmony. The air and sea temperatures remain warm all
year round with the main rainy season between April and June.
The
island was the most important trading post of Shirazi influence between
the 12th and 15th centuries AD. It has occupied a key position in the
East African trading routes between Kilwa and Zanzibar for centuries and
ruins from these times can be visited on Chole and Juani islands. In
more modern times, Mafia was the base used by British forces in World
War I, when in 1915, they assembled their aerial forces to scout for the
German battleship, Kรถnigsberg, which was wrecking havoc with British
shipping, and was hiding under thick foliage in the nearby Rufiji
Delta.
Today
the island has two main attractions: snorkelling with the seasonal
whale sharks off the east coast of Kilidoni from September to March,
and diving on the outer reefs of the west coast, the passes on the edge
of Chole Bay, and inside the bay itself. As luck would have it, when
the whale sharks aren't visible, this is the best time of year to see
turtle hatchings, from April to September, on the beaches of Juani
Island, 30 minutes by boat from Chole Bay.
Chole
Bay is blessed with a number of excellent dives within the bay,
ensuring diving in almost any weather, as well as easy access.
Visibility varies with the wind and tides, and is generally poor on
outgoing tides as there is the normal accumulation of organic and
granular matter in the water. The diving is tide-dependent for this
reason and also to avoid strong currents at the dive sites which are
close to the mouth of the Bay (Kinasi Pass). We usually dive on the full
low, full high or on the incoming tide for the Kinasi Pass drift dive
and the Chole and Kinsai walls. Diving outside the Bay is subject to
weather conditions and tides, as it can be dangerous to negotiate Kinasi
Pass on an outgoing tide; however, once outside the Bay the dives are
not tide dependent.
Kinasi
Pass has a surprising quantity of fish for a relatively barren area -
snappers are plentiful, morays and schools of barracuda are common, and
it is rare to not see at least one large grouper per dive here. Of the
reefs outside the passes Dindini caves north and south are a long series
of overhangs in the rock wall that drops from the reef top at six
metres down to the bottom at around 30 metres. Visibility is nearly
always over 20 metres here and often more, and the overhangs are
favourite haunts of large potato groupers. These cuties can grow up to
two metres long and 200 kilos, and often treat divers with curiosity,
happily hanging around to have their picture taken and show that they
are not disturbed by our presence. There is also good macrolife on the
walls, with plenty of whip corals and resident gobies. The sites down
by Juani are covered in soft purple and pink corals, and are excellent
places to encounter turtles.
Mafia Island accommodation
Kinasi Lodge
For divers and those wanting a splash of
refinement, our lodge of choice is Kinasi Lodge. The lodge has a
beautiful pool and beach, thoughtfully appointed and stylish rooms, the
food is both plentiful and some of the tastiest around. With only 13
independent, detached suites spread around the large grounds, amidst
cashew trees on a hillside which runs down to the beach on Chole Bay, it
is easy to relax and feel pampered.
For those who would like further
pampering, there is a spa and massage centre on site with a resident
Thai masseuse and masseur, offering massage, aromatherapy, hydrotherapy
and beauty treatments. Kinasi is the longest-running lodge on the
island, and is still run by it's founder, Peter Byrne. Rates for a
Garden sea view suite are at $150 per person per night full board or
$120 pppn half board in low season, going up to $190 pppn HB or $200 in
the main season for a Sea front suite. A 6-night HB in a Garden sea view
suite 10-dive package in low season would come to $1070 per person
based on 2-sharing. Marine park fees of $20 pppn not included.
Mafia Island Lodge
For divers with a smaller budget, Mafia Island Lodge fits the bill. Mafia Island Lodge stands amidst tall palms on a sandy beach in Chole Bay, in the heart of the marine park near Utende village on South coast of Mafia. Rates start at $130 per person per night full board in a standard room, $150 in a superior room, but they have some good value for money diving packages:
5-night, 4-dive package with 5 nights half board in a standard room, return airstrip transfers, 4 dives and 1 excursion for $691 per person based on two sharing. Marine Park fees of $20 pppn not included.
7-night, 8-dive package, half board in a superior room, return airstrip transfers, 1 excursion for $1061 per person based on two sharing. Marine Park fees of $20 pppn not included.
It accommodates more guests than Kinasi Lodge, with 14 Superior rooms, 18 Standard rooms and 2 Family rooms are set among the coconut palms with their own veranda overlooking the bay. They are all self-contained with air-conditioning, but are next to each other. Twin and double beds are available. Among the 34 rooms there are 2 family Suites, which are made out of 2 comfortable connecting rooms with one sharing bathroom, each one with its own veranda overlooking garden and sea. They may comfortably accommodate a maximum of 5 guests. All the rooms have garden and sea view. Hot and cold water is available 24 hours a day.
La Lua Cheia
To
the north of the island is the remote La Lua Cheia, an ideal spot for
those really wanting to get away from it all, of the proverbial beaten
track and off the grid.
Located
at Bweni Village near the northern tip of Mafia is a lovely promontory
called Ras Bweni. “Ras” stands for peninsula, and from here one has fine
views of the sweeping bay and palm-fringed beaches, superb sunsets over
the Rufiji Delta and the moon rising over the Indian Ocean.
LA
LUA CHEIA is a simple luxury camp located on Ras Bweni. Six large tents
under thatched “bandas” with verandahs lead directly onto the
magnificent beach; each has an ensuite bathroom built at the back of the
tent with solar-heated hot water, so life is very comfortable and
private. Solar lights and fans provide lighting and comfort at night. We
have kept the site as simple and undisturbed as possible while
providing all the necessary comforts.
The
rooms face north-west and take advantage of the sea breezes during the
hot-season as well as the marvelous sunsets over the Rufiji Delta. Food
is served always from the barbecue and home-made oven and includes fresh
seafood, oysters and mussels harvested by the local people.
The
wooden floors of the bar and restaurant, the antique and dhow-wood
furniture and the soft sand under your tent floors and eating out under
the stars on the beach all conspire to give the “barefoot” experience we
want our guests to enjoy.
The
stunning feature of the location is the nearly 3 km of beach stretching
away in both directions, all yours…..the sand is white and pure and one
can always swim, despite tidal changes. With complete isolation from
any other tourist facility or commercial activity of any kind, the place
is yours. Solitude, nature, complete relaxation from $125 per person
per night, full board.

KSTT WILDLIFE SAFARIS
KILIMANJARO-SERENGETI TOURS & TRAVELS LTD (KSTT)
(HANDLING
AGENT)
SAFARIS
Planning for a Tanzanian Safari, you
need to decide whether you want a private safari or a shared/group safari. A shared safari is a great way to meet
new people and reduce costs but (unless you are travelling alone) we usually
recommend a private safari because the price difference is not very significant
(sometimes none at all) and you'd be able to benefit from full itinerary
customization, travel at your own rhythm and pace and have more free space in
the car. Also, from our experience, there is more attention from your Guide.
The second decision is whether you want to go for a camping safari or a lodge safari. This decision will depend on both your budget and comfort requisites. We believe a camping safari, besides being cheaper, is more authentic and can be great fun. On the other hand, a lodging safari can provide you with a different level of comfort and luxury. Luxury camping is expensive, even more than some Lodge safaris. Light camping is always cheap and adventurous.
If you are interested in a private Tanzania safari, your
safari can be completely personalized to suit all your needs and wishes. If
you wish to join a group safari, at the bottom of this page you will find
a set of standard itineraries (that of course can be changed
if all the members of the group agree).
For every detail and doubt about these itineraries or for building a custom private one, please contact us through our indicated contacts.
To know the prices of a specific itinerary (standard or customized) please contact us too. We make a strong effort to offer the best possible prices, which depend upon many factors like season, the number of people, fluctuation of currency, fuel price increase, park fees, etc. etc.
If you send us a request, we can get back to you with best possible price.
What we can guarantee to you is the best price/quality ratio of the market. We prefer to make people’s wishes come true and create a great image rather than more profit. We usually do private safaris (for 2/3/4 people, with total decision freedom) at lower rates than other companies do in Tanzania safaris.

KSTT 007
SELOUS
SAFARIS
Facts & History
Selous Game Reserve named after the British explorer and soldier
Frederick Selous, is the largest game reserve in Africa.
It is the size ofSwitzerland. However, only the Northern sector is dedicated to
photographic tourism. Selous is home to a large number of lion, the
largest numbers of elephants in Africa and is one of the few places to see African Hunting dogs.
Climate & Best Times to Visit
KSTT services are open all year round but we do not advice our
clients to make bookings during April
& May which
is the main rainy
season inSouthern
Tanzania. We recommend people avoid April & May to be on the safe
side. Whilst you can get to the lodge and possibly do a safari during
this period, you will be restricted to using the main all-weather track and to
get your best safari we really need to get off road which is impossible when it
rains. When it has been raining, animals tend to stay in the bush because
they do not need to visit the usual water holes of the dry season and they are
therefore more difficult to spot.
The main peak
seasons in
Selous are July-October
and Xmas/NewYear. However, January
through March is a wonderful time to
visit the park. Not only are international flights less expensive, but the
reserve is green and
lush because
of the short rains of November-December. During February lots of animals
have their young so not only is the park more beautiful, there is more to see
in terms of animals. Whilst the climate is a bit hotter and from late
February through March gets quite humid, it should be considered as an
excellent period to see game.
KSTT S01 Game Drives:
Game drives are early morning departing the camp around 0530
after a quick cup of tea or coffee returning to the camp for a late
breakfast. Alternatively, you can depart the lodge at 3:30pm for a late
afternoon game drive returning around 6:30pm. The early morning and early
evening being the cooler times of day are best for wildlife viewing.
Amongst other mammals, one can expect to encounter lion, large herds of
elephant, large numbers of giraffe and Zebra, many antelope including Impala,
Eland, Kudu, Waterbuck, Cape Buffalo, Wildebest, African hunting dogs and a
huge variety of stunning birdlife.
KSTT S02 Boat Safari
We combine our boat safari with a full day game drive departing
the lodge after breakfast and returning around 4pm. We take a packed lunch.
This is a great day out passing through vast areas of the reserve to and from
the Lake where we do our boat safaris. On the Lake there
are lots of hippos and crocs as well as large numbers of birds. Larger mammals
such as elephant can often be seen on the banks.
KSTT S02 Walking Safari
An early morning walking safari is a lovely way to start the day
and can bring a wonderful and new perspective to your safari experience giving
the opportunity to study the smaller fauna as well as studying prints of both
large and small. A stop off at our water hole and tree house is a nice
way to end an evening walking safari.
KSTT S02 Maasai Village tour
There is a Masai friend called Saita who is very much
cooperative. For those guests who want to meet Saita and his family, we can
take them to his nearby village. Guests can see first-hand how Masai live as
well as learning about traditional medicine and how to make Masai jewellery.
This is a wonderful non-commercial experience which we highly value.
